The Telly's Team
Mandy started at Telly's in February of 1999 to learn about flowers and have some
fun. She only planned on working until the summer was over, but then the Office
Manager position became available in July of 1999, and she jumped at the
opportunity. She has been handling all the day to day, behind the scenes aspects for
all locations of the business ever since. When Mandy isn't busy working at Telly's,
she keeps busy at home with her husband, Tony and their son, Tyler, as well as with
gardening, coaching youth soccer and youth basketball, and being Head Room Mom for
her son's class. Email Amanda at amanda@tellys.com.
Her infectious smile, warmth and wealth of practical gardening experience have been an integral part of Telly's since the mid 90's. Judy's hands-on expericence in over-wintering tender perennials is legendary. She is also our resident expert on topiary. Her talents and creativity never cease to inspire us all. As a founding member of the Troy Garden Club and a long standing member of the Michigan Herb Society, Judy is deeply rooted in our local gardening community, and is always willing to share her sage wisdom, constantly in bloom with new information. Her own stunning gardens have been featured on the Troy Garden Walk. Judy loves conducting workshops and giving lectures on a broad range of topics from the practical to the whimsical. Email Judy at jcorn4@sbcglobal.net.
Our beloved friend & comrade passed away in July of 2010. Always willing to share his vast and unique experience, & his sage and sly wit, we will miss him dearly. There is no doubt he will be fondly remembered by all who knew him, those who had the benefit of sharing in his life-path experience, and those who grew because of the seeds he planted.
Hector was our resident bonsai expert. He was a local 'boy', having grown up in Royal Oak. While working as a Mechanical Engineer, he became an avid gardener, revitalizing the landscape around the old farmhouse he lived in. After retiring, he decided he needed something more to do in our Michigan winters. He became interested in bonsai as a hobby in 1985, but didn't get serious about it until he was inspired by several bonsai masters in 1987. He was particularly inspired by Jerry Meislik, a very talented master of the artform. Hector used the 15 years he spent living in Florida as an opportunity to learn more about the tropical trees often used in the art. Moving back to Michigan, his 'hobby' and expertise continued to grow. Talking with Hector, I always came away with a new appreciation and enthusiasm for the art of bonsai. He loved nothing better than to talk with anyone who wanted to learn more about caring for, and training their trees. Thanks to Hector, Telly's now has a broad and unique selection of stock available for everyone; from the first-time grower to the collector.

I have known Maria for over 30 years. Yes, thirty years! That's because we are cousins. She has worked at Telly's since 1992. Maria is the Greenhouse Sales Manager. That means she is in charge of growing, ordering, watering, selling, signing, spacing, grooming, etc. every annual that we sell out of the greenhouse. This is a huge responsibility, but if you ask anyone on staff to tell you what she does, there's a lot more. Maria is like the glue that keeps everything together at Telly's. She does the scheduling, prepares the store for classes, decorates memorial blankets, handles all of the Christmas fundraisers. The list goes on and on. But, the best thing about Maria is that the entire staff loves her to death. She's like everyone's big sister - especially me. She keeps me out of a lot of trouble, mostly because I'm not terribly organized. Customers also find her extra pleasant because she tends to not use all the botanical names that too many of us often over exploit.
About 13 years ago I came to the greenhouses and announced that I had finally received my pilots license. I asked everyone if they wanted to be my first passenger in the plane. Maria willfully volunteered and a few minutes later we were flying over the greenhouses. Since then, we have flown to many greenhouses many times. She even let me take her three kids in the plane - at the same time. That's trust.
Maria is also our in store chef, having prepared many gyro sandwiches for us during the slow paced days of winter. Her children, Tony, Alex and Anna, and many of their friends, have always supplied Telly's with an almost infinite supply of workers during the busy season.
These are just some of the things big sisters do.
Eric has worked at Telly's since 1990. His mastery of the written language has awarded him numerous articles in Michigan Gardener and hundreds of entries in our advertisements and website. I have had the pleasure of traveling with Eric extensively. Together we have visited plant places from the east coast to the west, and explored the vastness of China.
Eric has attended many of horticulture's celebrated gatherings where I have seen him befuddle/bewilder some of the industries most knowledgeable experts. His responsibilities at Telly's include the acquisition and propagation of new plant material. (Eric is constantly inroducing us to new plants.) He manages our Tropicals and Hard Goods departments (everything that's not a plant), administers the Telly's website, maintains and sells our poinsettia crop, and oversees our computerized point of sale system. In his spare time, he indulges in miniature gardening, the development of "TellyVision", and is an international award winning glass artist with works on file with the Corning Glass Museum.
Needless to say, Eric's broad range of talents continue to help make Telly's what you experience today. I think Eric has worked almost every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday for the last couple of decades, so it's likely that you have been helped by him in your last visit or two. His uncanny knowledge of annuals, tropicals, and woody plants will continue to amaze us for years and years. The same goes for his sense of humor. Eric, by the way, is single. Email him your digits at eric@tellys.com.
Sara graduated in 2000 from Western Michigan University majoring in Art and Minored in Biological Science and Psychology. She studied abroad in Ecuador for 6 months and Dominican Republic/Haiti for 2 months. She started with Telly's in 2001, working in Annual/Greenhouse Sales and production.
Sara is a member of the American Society of Botanical Artists and American Horticultural Society and is a talented artist in the media of water-color. Her eye for color and intuitive skill at using texture and style result in an endless littany of plant combinations and container gardens which can only be descibed as "beautifully inspired & astounding". Naturally, she is Telly's talented expert in Container Gardening. Email sara at sara@tellys.com.
Often accused of being a horti-geek, Michael has been fascinated with plants and nature since he was a small child. His passion for gardening was first sparked in the gardens of his mother and grandfather. For 19 years, Michael's "real" job was as a computer programmer/analyst for the world's largest car hauling company. A frequent visitor to Telly's as a customer, in the spring of 2000 he decided to indulge his horticultural interest completely by working at the store part time. He quickly learned that he had an innate aptitude for the position. His knowledge and passion for plants is something he loves to share, both with customers and fellow staff members. This "hobby" soon led to a full time position when overseas outsourcing ended his IT career. After a brief absence in 2007 Mike was glad to come home to Telly's in 2008, accepting the position of Perennial Sales Manager. Email Mike at mikeh@tellys.com.
The winner of the 2007 Grower Talks Young Grower Award, Michael Maran, joined Telly's staff as Head Grower in 2008. Mike brings with him a wealth of knowledge, experience and enthusiasm.
Graduating from Ohio State University in 1995, Michael has a Bachelor of Science in Horticulture. He first worked as a grower in perennial production facility in Sylvania, Ohio. He has been with a large wholesale greenhouse in Maumee, Ohio for the last 10 years as head grower. Besides growing plants, Mike has lectured to other industry professionals and students on innovative growing techniques and worked with kids in both 4H and FFA (Future Farmers of America). His dedication to overall improvement of the industry and encouraging the development of young growers is a nice fit with the Telly's vision.
Mike primarily works at Telly's production farm where he continues to produce the highest quality plant material for our gardening customers. He oversees all aspects of the 16 greenhouse operation, including Telly's new organically grown, earth-friendly production program. The innovative ideas that helped him win the award are now in practice, and contribute greatly to the quality of plants you enjoy today.
The question for the Young Grower competition was “What do we need to do to make our industry more exiting to today’s customers?” The competition is open to any grower age 35 or under and is sponsored by BASF Turf & Ornamental, Ball Horticultural and Ohio Florists Association in conjunction with Grower Talks magazine. The winners are considered the ‘best of the best’ in exhibiting innovation and a passion for overcoming industry challenges according to Steve Larson, BASF Turf & Ornamental national ornamentals accounts manager.
Telly’s prides itself on producing the highest quality plants possible. Mike believes in using such techniques as DIF (Differential Between Day/Night temperature), effective scheduling, and proper irrigation to produce the high quality plants demanded by gardeners today. These techniques are both customer friendly and environmentally friendly alternatives to the overuse of chemical growth regulators; a concept that has always been heavily valued by Telly’s owner, George Papadelis.
George and the staff at Telly’s, welcomes Mike and his ability to enhance our commitment to producing the best plants for our customers. Email Mike at mikem@tellys.com.
Felipe joined the Telly's family in 1997. From the start, he has been an integral part of the back-bone that supports the day to day operations of Telly's. He's the guy that fixes the heater when it goes out at three in the morning in the middle of winter. He keeps our trucks running, our deliveries on track, and keeps the mechanical parts of the greenhouse & the farm running smoothly. When you're waiting for a plant to arrive from the farm, odds are, Felipe will be driving the truck to get it here. In fact, he keeps the constant supply between the farm and the greenhouse moving throughout the year. It's assuring for us to know he's pretty much on call 24/7, and not unusual for him to put in 16 - 18 hour days, especially in the peak season. Thank you, Felipe.
Susan has been working at Telly's since 1999. She is your friendly, neighborhood rose lady. Roses have been growing in her gardens for many, many years. As I hope most of you know, Telly's has developed a tremendous reputation for offering a large selection of high quality roses. Each rose season begins the previous year when Susan and I visit our Canadian "bare-root" rose source. The roses are planted in rows which we walk along all day long while Susan takes notes and I take photos. I consider myself pretty durable, but after walking several miles and enduring the inevitable leg amputating thorns, without a lunch break, I have a hard time getting excited about the new orange climber. Susan, on the other hand, turns into the energizer bunny on this annual event. Her enthusiasm and pace does not falter until the last rose is analyzed for disease resistance, vigor, and flower quality.
In March the roses are shipped to Telly's as bare root plants in many, many plastic bags. Susan sorts them, soaks them in water, prunes them, helps pot them, and tags them. She waters them, fertilizes them, and grooms them until spring when her efforts yield an exceptional specimen that awaits its new home.
That's the mechanics of Telly's rose program. But the part that makes a Telly's roses even better than other roses is Susan. Virtually every rose we sell grows under Susan's careful supervision. She makes sure that every customer she helps gets the right rose to suit their needs, and, that the customer is aware of what is necessary to optimize rose performance. As a result, Susan has developed a loyal customer base that relies on her for all their rose needs.
Susan is also my Christmas decor guru. She has an excellent eye for displays and creates stunning wreaths, door arches, swags, memorial blankets, etc. If you have a special need when it comes to Holiday decor, Susan is your gal. She has accompanied me to the Chicago, Michigan and Atlanta gift marts where her design and buying talents have been very valuable.
Susan and flying. For years and years fellow employees and I would fly to conventions, nurseries, gardens, etc. in my four passenger airplane. Susan always said "I'm never getting in that thing." We all tried to convince her, but she wouldn't budge on the issue. Then two years ago, we were invited to an Ohio nursery to learn about a new rose series that they wanted us to sell. Susan wanted to attend so we talked her into trying the airplane and assured her that we would land immediately and drive if she didn't like it. She reviewed her will with her husband, Rick, and decided to roll the dice. Well, sitting in a small airplane is usually like sitting in a parked car except that you are moving very fast and the view is amazing. This trip was no exception. Susan sat in the front seat and laughed at herself for not flying sooner. We had a great trip that I am sure Susan will never forget. When we landed she began planning other flights that would in some way benefit Telly's rose program. Email Susan at susan@tellys.com.
